{"id":6840,"date":"2014-11-04T14:48:36","date_gmt":"2014-11-04T14:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.strettoblaster.com\/wordpress\/?p=6840"},"modified":"2021-04-01T19:44:07","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T18:44:07","slug":"abiti-lucidi-epoca-hip-hop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/strettoblaster.com\/it\/wrong-ideas\/abiti-lucidi-epoca-hip-hop\/","title":{"rendered":"L'era delle tute lucide nell'Hip-Hop: una brutta moda, ragazzi."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>No shiny suits allowed, let&#8217;s cut it to the chase, alright?<\/h2>\n<p>Back on the grind to dissect and investigate the magical world of hip hop fashion, with all its myths and mistakes, or disasters, I have thought of an easy target for this time.<\/p>\n<p>If there has ever been an easy target for this column, this is putting on &#8220;<strong>shiny suits<\/strong>&#8220;, the dazzling suits of the Bad Boy golden period, the very same ones that your average My Little Pony would call &#8220;<em>mega-sparkling<\/em>&#8220;. And this would be enough to close the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, <em> dissed <\/em>by a Minipony&#8230;&#8217;nough said.<\/p>\n<p>And with good reason: the shiny suits represent everything that was wrong in that particular historical period, between 1996 and 2001, circa. Shitty music (word to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oeZRqtV08QU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Santino<\/a>), shitty imagery, shitty attitude.<\/p>\n<h3>The origin of a bad (boy) era: the rising signs.<\/h3>\n<p>The names won&#8217;t be changed to protect the people responsible for such a fashion disaster. We&#8217;re talking of course about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hype_Williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Hype Williams<\/strong><\/a>, the most-requested video maker for Hip-Hop and R&amp;B superstars in his own era, and, mostly, her associate and stylist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juneambrose.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>June Ambrose<\/strong><\/a>, one of the key figures in the urban fashion industry for the Nineties and TwoThousands.<\/p>\n<p>The early signs of this tremendous shiny disease came around 1996 when the fish-eyed aesthetics and colour corrections of Hype Williams met <strong>Busta Rhymes&#8217;<\/strong> flamboyant style, first.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single-article__video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"title=\"Busta Rhymes \u200e- Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check (Official Video) [Explicit]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EQzvQO2LcA4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Things were still bearable then, but in the end they got worse (this was in 1997). For real. Busta came to a glossier style and successful videos (think of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4b6P12eiLpo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dangerous<\/a>)\u00a0<\/em>while the whole industry was about to witness the definitive rise to stardom of <strong>Puff Daddy<\/strong>, <strong>Jay Z<\/strong>, and <strong>Missy Elliott<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Blunders, many blunders (pun intended): a Caribbean Carnival inspiration.<\/h3>\n<p>The story, according to June Ambrose herself, is that she came up with the idea of designing these new costumes of &#8220;shiny leather&#8221; for Puff Daddy and Ma$e, at first, to match Hype&#8217;s flamboyant style of shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Caribbean Carnival and its colourful gadgets were the primary inspiration that led June to design such attires, we can easily say that the target of being &#8220;loud&#8221; was completely hit. Hands down.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"single-article__video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"title=\"The Notorious B.I.G. - &quot;Mo Money Mo Problems&quot; (Uncensored)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yYzrSGRzttk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>After a <em>brilliant<\/em> debut in the video of <em>Mo Money Mo Problems<\/em>, we can easily say that 1997 was all a florilegium ([||]), up to the golden suits of Mase and the Lox (!) in the remix of <em>Honey<\/em> by Mariah Carey.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single-article__video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"title=\"Mariah Carey - Honey (Bad Boy Remix - Official HD Video) ft. Mase, The Lox\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Oy2bwwIsS40?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Someone had even thought that something good could come out of Harlem&#8230;But instead, we had to wait until <strong>Smoke DZA<\/strong> and <strong>A$AP Rocky<\/strong> and, on different levels, Immortal Technique, in order not to disrespect that borough.<\/p>\n<p>But I digress.<\/p>\n<p>I was saying: the sparkling shiny suits. We&#8217;re not even sure about the purity of the materials they were made of, but certainly not hardcore acetate, which has always been synonymous with an aspiration to <em>realness<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single-article__video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"title=\"Missy Elliott &amp; Da Brat - Sock It 2 Me [Official Music Video]\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9UvBX3REqSY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A mix of weird vinyl, PVC, and leather, with such a rough cut, made the skinny onesies of the Treacherous Three and The Furious Five look like evening dresses. Oh, and let&#8217;s not forget about <strong>Missy Elliott,<\/strong> sure.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12953 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/strettoblaster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad-boy-shiny-suits.jpg\" alt=\"Bad Boy Records shiny suits era\" width=\"900\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/strettoblaster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad-boy-shiny-suits.jpg 900w, https:\/\/strettoblaster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad-boy-shiny-suits-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/strettoblaster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad-boy-shiny-suits-768x410.jpg 768w, https:\/\/strettoblaster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad-boy-shiny-suits-370x197.jpg 370w, https:\/\/strettoblaster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad-boy-shiny-suits-600x320.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/>\n<h2>The Bad Boy shiny suits era wasn&#8217;t all glitters and gold, sorry.<\/h2>\n<p>The golden age of the Bad Boy can be debated at length (I am going to play it straight here: for me, it is simply questionable, in general), but one thing is certain:<\/p>\n<p>even if the musical part, by <a href=\"https:\/\/strettoblaster.com\/shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digging hard<\/a>, shows some merits (despite biting almost elevated to an \u201cart\u201d: in a sense, it all started from there&#8230;);<\/p>\n<p>even if the videos of Hype Williams, in their ostentatious <em>grandeur, <\/em>still show some points of interest;<\/p>\n<p>even if the character of Puffy had not yet proved his true nature to the world,<\/p>\n<p>it is undeniable that Ma$e, Loon, G-Dep and Black Rob, led by Diddy in a bright suit, have an arsenic enema aesthetic.
